  • Sheki: Sheki is an ancient Silk Road city of 68,000 in northwest Azerbaijan. In 2017, it was included in the global UNESCO Creative Cities network for the serious cultivation of its various handicrafts and folk art. But Sheki also has a lighter side: it is well known for its humour, one of the aspects cited by TURKSOY (The International Organization of Turkic Culture) when it selected Sheki as the Cultural Capital of the Turkic World in 2016. Visions recently visited Sheki to explore this reputation as the humour capital of Azerbaijan.
  • Palace of Shaki Khans: A unique architectural monument of the khanate, the Sheki Khans' Palace was built in 1762 by Huseyn khan and sits shaded by huge chinar trees within the khan's fortress at the top of this charming Silk Road city. The palace windows are stunning examples of the ancient art of 'shebeke' – wooden lattices filled with stained glass and put together without glue or nails! After visiting the palace you can also visit the nearby shebeke workshop to see how intricately these vibrant lattices are formed.
  • Church of Kish: In the villages of Sheki region there are several Christian architectural monuments of Caucasian Albania, the most famous of which is the church in the village of Kish. The official date of the laying of foundational stone of it is 1st century AD, the time when the territory of Azerbaijan was a part of the Caucasian Albania.Kish temple, built of limestone, is the first temple of hall type with a dome, created in the early Middle Ages. Currently, the historical and architectural monument works as a museum.
  • Sheki Fortress: Located at the top of the hilly north-eastern part of the city, Sheki fortress was built during the reign of the first Sheki Khan Haji Chalabi (1743-1755). The fortress was a stronghold of the Khan’s stronghold, within which a number of the city’s buildings were erected.
  • Sheki: Karvansaray. Swift development of trade in the Middle Ages enhanced importance of caravanserai existing in the territory of Azerbaijan at that time and favored construction of new ones. Generally caravanserai were built in form of castles with one gate, closing of which made them impregnable during dangerous incidents.

    “Caravanserai” historical complex in Sheki is two magnificent caravanserai which reached present days and traditionally named “Yukhary” and “Ashaghy” caravanserai, which means “Upper” and “Lower” Caravanserai in translation from Azerbaijani into English. Construction of these caravanserai is dated back to the 18th-19th centuries
    “Lower” caravanserai has a rectangular shape with a large inner yard in the centre of which is located a pool. Total area of the caravanserai is 8000 m2 and dimensions are 55x85 meters. Four entries led to the yard from all four corners of the buildings. There are 242 rooms in the lower caravanserai. Earlier there were merchant stores and storage rooms in the coaching inn, but the first floor was intended for guests whom the rooms were leased. Each room had a manhole which was connected to the ground floor with a stepladder and it was very comfortable for merchants who wanted control the safety of their products at any time.

    Since 1988, the lower caravanserai is used as a hotel complex for tourists, guests of the city and local residents. There is a restaurant of national cuisine with 100 places functioning in the territory of the complex. There are luxury suits in compliance with international standards in the hotel.

The Sheki Khan House
Built in the 18th century and recently thoroughly restored the house of Sheki Khans, owned by relatives of the Khans, is a transitional link from a national house to a palace type building. The interiors are richly decorated with murals and colorful shabaka, made by the same artists who painted the Palace of Sheki Khans.
