- St. Peter's Basilica: The Papal Basilica of Saint Peter, also called Saint Peter's Basilica, is located in Vatican City, an independent microstate inside Rome, Italy. It is a High Renaissance Italian basilica. Pope Nicholas and Pope Julius first envisioned it in the fifteenth century as a replacement for the dilapidated Old St. Peter's Basilica, which was built by Roman Emperor Constantine the Great in the fourth century. The present basilica was completed on November 18, 1626, having begun construction on April 18, 1506.

It is the most recognizable building in Vatican City. Its 2.3-hectare dome is a prominent feature of the skyline of Rome. In Catholic and Christian traditions, it is regarded as one of the holiest sites. Its titular, St. Peter, who served as the leader of the twelve Apostles of Jesus, the first Bishop of Antioch, and eventually the first Bishop of Rome, making him the first Pope, is traditionally buried there. The construction of the basilica took place from April 18, 1506, and 1615. Ultimately, on November 18, 1626, Pope Urban gave the Basilica a ceremonial dedication.
